New Border Fights After Ceasefire Ends
After an interlude of ceasefire, Pakistan-Afghanistan border fights resumed. At this, former U.S. President Donald Trump made statements claiming that it would be easy for him to cease the war between the two countries.
Trump spoke at a dinner reception with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, where he discussed several global conflicts, including the ongoing conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
Trump's Statements about the War
Trump asserted that he was sure Pakistan had attacked Afghanistan and that it would be simple for him to resolve the issue if he were president. He then added that he prefers finishing wars since he does not wish for people to perish. According to his own claims, his past actions as president had preserved countless lives by averting or terminating wars.
He claimed that he had ended eight wars during his term and had stopped further escalation in different spheres. Trump reminded the audience once again that he had previously ended tensions between India and Pakistan earlier. Nevertheless, he was regretful that he never received any credit for doing so, even the Nobel Peace Prize.
Reference to the Nobel Peace Prize
Trump mentioned Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, this year's Nobel Peace Prize winner. He called her a beautiful woman and said while commendations are nice, saving lives and putting an end to wars is the central issue with him.
Current Situation in Pakistan and Afghanistan
Trump made the comments after a 48-hour peace truce between Afghanistan and Pakistan had expired. Media reports had indicated that the two governments were ready to sit down in Doha to negotiate further how they would renew the truce and attain a peaceful agreement.
Violence then broke out again, however, as shootouts erupted between their forces. The Taliban claimed that Pakistan had launched airstrikes in Paktika province. The airstrikes were said to have led to the collapse of the ceasefire agreement by them.
