The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed that three local cricketers were among the victims. The cricketers' names were given as Kabir Agha, Sibgutullah, and Haroon. They had played a friendly match in Sarna, the Paktika provincial capital, and were on their way back to Urgun when they were hit by the airstrike.

After the attack, the ACB pulled out of next month's T20 tri-series. The series was to feature Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The ACB said that it cannot play in a tournament with Pakistan following this attack.
