Trump Warns India Again of Huge Tariffs
Ex-US President Donald Trump threatened India again that it would be facing huge tariffs if it continues to import Russian oil. Addressing the media on board Air Force One, Trump told them that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had assured him that India would discontinue Russian oil imports.
When the media reported India's rejection of these words, Trump responded by suggesting that if India continues doing that, it would still keep having considerable tariffs. He further stated that he does not think India will be saying so.
India Rejects Trump's Comments
Trump had complained earlier last week at the White House that India was buying oil from Russia. Trump stated that he had called Modi and apparently pledged to halt the buy.
India promptly denied having made the assertion. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal explained that there was no such meeting. He repeated that Indian national interest and Indians' interest are what guide its energy policy decision-making.
Sunny Outlook in U.S.-India Trade Negotiations
Stretched across purchases of oil, India-U.S. trade negotiations have turned the corner, Indian government officials report. Most of the issues have been resolved, reports have suggested, officials say. The officials expect the change for the better to materialize soon.
A Union Minister Piyush Goyal-headed delegation flew to Washington last week in a bid to drive negotiations. The two countries seem optimistic about further economic transactions despite continued geopolitical tensions.
