WhatsApp's New Anti-Spam Approach
Meta-owned WhatsApp is rolling out a feature that will restrict spam messages. The company will implement a monthly limit on messages sent to individuals who are not on your contact list or have responded to you. The feature is intended to limit unwanted notifications and promotional messages. TechCrunch reports the company wishes to enable people to have a neater inbox and improved chat experience overall.
Why WhatsApp is Adding This Feature
WhatsApp began as a one-to-one messaging application. It then added communities, business profiles, and customer support solutions. As growth progressed, messages sent by unknown contacts in large numbers increased. More individuals are getting unwanted messages from companies or random contacts. To combat this problem, WhatsApp is adding a monthly message limit on non-contact or inactive user chats.
How Message Limit Works
Suppose a user sends three messages to a new contact and receives no response, then those messages will be charged towards the monthly limit. WhatsApp has not announced the message limit so far. When users reach their limit, they might receive a warning message. When the limit is reached, they will not be permitted to send messages to new contacts until the end of their current monthly cycle.
WhatsApp also indicated that the new system will not impact usual users who chat mainly to recognized contacts. The feature will rather be used to prevent spam, as opposed to restricting usual chat. Business accounts and spammers who usually contact new users will be impacted more.
Current Anti-Spam Measures
Recently, WhatsApp has released several anti-spam features. These include limits on marketing messages, an unsubscribe option for business messages, and new bulk broadcast controls. The new message limit extends this work of keeping inboxes of users more tidy and spam-free.
