Trump's H-1B Visa Fee Increase Creates Uncertainty
President Donald Trump's move to increase the fee for filing for an H-1B visa to $100,000 has caused a number of U.S. companies to be in a state of uncertainty. As a result of the move, a number of organizations are going back to review their recruitment guidelines for foreign employees who arrive on H-1B visas. Walmart is among the latest firms to respond.
Walmart Considers Its Policy
Walmart has stopped hiring fresh H-1B visa applicants, according to a report by Bloomberg. As of now, Walmart already has more than 2,000 employees under the H-1B visa program, according to government statistics. A spokesperson confirmed that Walmart is committed to its policies. The spokesperson further added that Walmart continues to seek skilled professionals who will be able to provide quality service to customers.
Clarification on H-1B Visa Fee
Trump's declaration of the $100,000 fee for an H-1B visa brought attention worldwide. However, subsequently, the White House clarified that it is an application fee to be paid once and not a recurring annual fee. Shortly after the announcement, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce had filed a legal complaint against the move.
New Guidelines From the US Government
To counter the challenge posed by the court, the Trump administration came up with new regulations. The existing immigrants in the US who are modifying the status of the visa or renewing a valid H-1B visa are exempted from paying the $100,000 fee. It is only those applying for a new H-1B visa outside the US who will have to pay the entire fee.
