Prime Minister to Attend Kuala Lumpur Summit Virtually
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the forthcoming ASEAN annual summit virtually. The summit will be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from October 26 to October 28. Modi posted on the social website X that he had told Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of his virtual attendance through a telephonic conversation on Thursday.
Leaders from other countries, including US President Donald Trump, are also likely to be present at the summit in person. India will be represented at the event by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on behalf of the Prime Minister.
Political Reaction from the Opposition
The Congress party criticized Prime Minister Modi’s decision not to attend the summit in person. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh claimed that Modi avoided the summit because of the US President’s presence. He added that there had been ongoing discussions about whether Modi would attend and suggested that the same reason led to Modi skipping the Gaza peace conference in Egypt earlier.
