Republican Leaders' Statements
White House's past strategist Steve Bannon has recently discussed the likelihood of Donald Trump seeking a third term in 2028. According to Bannon, Trump is exploring possible means of pursuing this and invited others to support the move. Following his remarks, there has been increased interest in Trump's possible third campaign.
Bannon was also kind to say about Republican contenders JD Vance and Marco Rubio, labeling them good future presidential prospects and fine gentlemen.
Trump's Previous Statements on a Third Term
- Trump has previously commented on seeking a third term on more than one occasion. He indicated there were some way to make it possible, which fueled individuals talking about the subject in public.
- But then-former U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi stated that it would be extremely difficult to come up with a legal pathway for a third term. She stated constitutional amendments in theory might allow it, but the process would be incredibly daunting.
The Constitutional Limitation
- The 22nd Amendment to the Constitution now prohibits anyone from becoming president more than twice. Trump would have to have the amendment changed to run for a third term.
- To change the Constitution, both Congress and sufficient state legislatures would have to give approval. Experts think that a revision like this would be highly improbable.
- There has only been one four-term U.S. president in history, Franklin D. Roosevelt, and it was his elections that led to the institution of the 22nd Amendment in 1951 to ensure no president serves more than two terms.
