Pakistan's ISI Plans To Expand Operations In Bangladesh For Espionage Against India

Pakistan's Expanding Espionage Activities

Pakistan, which likes to counter India by undertaking cross-border strikes, is seen taking a new leap in its espionage game. Based on reports of an English news channel from sources privy to the move, it is learned that Pakistan is set to make Bangladesh the hub of its Indian espionage. The special cell of Pakistan's intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), would be accommodated in the Pakistani Embassy at Dhaka.

Strengthening Bangladesh–Pakistan Relations

The relations between Bangladesh and Pakistan have also strengthened recently. Pakistan Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Chairman General Sahir Shamshad Mirza had recently visited Bangladesh with the aim of enhancing defense cooperation. As part of the visit, an eight-member Pakistani delegation had a meeting with Bangladesh's National Security Intelligence (NSI) officials and Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) officials.

Formation of an ISI Cell in Dhaka

Bangladesh has, the report says, permitted Pakistan to send its intelligence officers to its High Commission in Dhaka. Along the way, there will be a special ISI cell set up at the embassy in a matter of days. The cell will comprise one brigadier, two colonels, and four majors of ISI, reports say. The agenda of this cell is said to be increased spying on India and plotting anti-Indian operations through Bangladesh, if need be.

Military Alliance between Bangladesh and Pakistan

In return for permitting the ISI cell, Bangladesh will be provided with military assistance by Pakistan. The collaboration is said to include technical assistance, defense training, arms supply, as well as mutual air and naval exercises. Bangladesh has also expressed interest in buying Pakistan's JF-17 Thunder multi-role combat fighter aircraft. A senior Bangladesh army delegation is to travel to Pakistan shortly to sign an MoU on these defense offers.

Bangladesh's Caretaker Government and Building Ties with Pakistan

With the caretaker government taking over after the Bangladesh government was toppled into the hands of Sheikh Hasina, the latter has initiated more contacts with Pakistan. Pakistan has started providing arms and food grains to Bangladesh. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has already met Bangladesh caretaker leader Yunus several times. Both nations have agreed that there will be periodic meetings at the military level and official visits between the two countries in the coming times.
