Trump's Statement
United States of America President Donald Trump has made the declaration of resumption of nuclear weapons testing. To him, he has ordered the Department of War to initiate the process without any delay. The move has been made when Russia and China are still increasing their nuclear capabilities.
Trump stated this on Truth Social. In his statement, he said, "The United States has more nuclear weapons than any other country in the world.". We managed to do that during my first term. I did not wish to carry out nuclear tests again because they are destructive. There is no alternative option now, however. Russia is second in having nuclear power, and China is third. Both countries can be in the same position as America in five years' time. As they go ahead and fashion their programs, I have directed the Department of War to resume tests.
Context and Global Developments
Russia has been ramping up its weapons manufacture and has pulled out of key arms control treaties. Russia has also made advancements in its nuclear program. Russia recently tested its nuclear-powered underwater drone, Poseidon. President Vladimir Putin announced that the test was successful.
Meanwhile, China is also stepping up its nuclear power. US intelligence officials have cautioned that in the next five years, China's nuclear power can rival that of Russia and the United States.
Timing of the Decision
Trump made the announcement hours before he met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Busan, South Korea. So far, the Pentagon has remained silent on Trump's order.
