Microsoft AI Chief Warns Against Efforts To Give AI Its Own Intelligence

AI Development and Growing Competition

  • Artificial Intelligence is developing very fast. Major technological companies like Google, OpenAI, Meta, and Microsoft are heavily investing in building capable AI models. These systems already can do many human-like tasks, but still they don't contain human-like consciousness or awareness.
  • During the AfroTech conference organized by CNBC, Mustafa Suleyman, the CEO of Microsoft AI, shared his thoughts on this matter. He called for a halt to projects intended to develop fully human-like intelligent AI. For him, AI can never rise to the level of human thought or emotional intelligence.

Suleyman's Views on Artificial Intelligence Research

  • Suleyman further criticized researchers and developers trying to make AI self-aware or emotionally intelligent. He claimed that only humans can have real emotions, while AI cannot experience them. Further, he said that the research is unlikely to succeed and should not be urged.
  • He elaborated, "If you ask the wrong question, you will get the wrong answer," and implied that one such wrong approach is trying to give AI its own consciousness. Suleyman encouraged developers to build tools of AI to assist humans, rather than systems that attempt to think independently.

Difference Between Human Emotions and AI Reactions

  • Suleyman underlined the gap between human feelings and AI reaction. He expressed that when human beings suffer physical or emotional pain, it is real and deeply personal; whereas, AI will never have such feelings, nor understand these emotions. Even when there is an attempt by developers to model artificial responses to mimic emotional ones, those will never be real feelings.
  • He also pointed out that organizations undertaking the task of giving AI consciousness may have various goals, but such work lacks true purpose. According to him, spending time on these projects reflects a misunderstanding of what consciousness actually means.
