Massive Increase in Rejection Rates
Canada has rejected thousands of applications for student visas from India in recent times. According to data from its immigration department, 74% of the applications submitted by Indian students in August 2025 have been refused, against the corresponding rate of only 32% recorded in 2023.
By comparison, 24 percent of Chinese students were rejected, while all other countries combined had an overall average of 40 percent.
Canada Tightens International Student Policies
The increased rejection rate has come after two successive years of tightening up Canada's policies over international student visa applications, with the inflow of applications from India having shrunk. Canada has remained the second most sought-after destination for international education after the United States.
In all, the country hosted close to 1 million foreign students in 2024, and 41 percent of that number came from India, followed by students from China and Vietnam.
Reasons for the High Rejection Rate
Analysts attribute this to conditions of a more local economic and social nature, such as housing shortages, infrastructural pressures, and the financial capacity of students to meet living costs. These have been driving the more strict evaluation of visa applications.
