WhatsApp Introduces Cross-Platform Messaging Feature

WhatsApp to Get New Messaging Option

The company, WhatsApp by Meta, is working on a new feature: a cross-platform messaging update in which users will be able to send and receive messages on WhatsApp from other compatible messaging apps. This means that users will be allowed to share photos, videos, voice notes, and documents between apps. However, it will not support status updates, disappearing messages, and stickers.

As per WABetaInfo, a platform that tracks updates on WhatsApp, the feature is currently in testing. Its release is expected next year. The update apparently has been brought about in line with new EU regulations on messaging interoperability.

How to Enable Third-Party Chats

To enable the feature, users need to go into Settings > Account > Third-party chats and toggle it on. Once enabled, WhatsApp will provide users with two ways to view messages:

  • Combined Inbox: WhatsApp messages and third-party applications show up together in one place.
  • Separate Inbox: Messages from third-party apps are in a different folder.

Additional Features and Security

The new update also brings support for various features, including push notifications, media upload quality selection, and in-app alerts. Status update, stickers, and disappearing messages, among others, will still not be available for third-party chats.

The conversations using other messaging apps will still be end-to-end encrypted to ensure safety. WhatsApp said that each of the connected apps might follow its own data protection policies. The feature is cross-platform messaging, which is optional; users can turn it off whenever they want.
