Sheikh Hasina Says She Will Return To Bangladesh Only When Democracy Is Restored

Hasina's condition for returning to Bangladesh

Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is staying in India, said that she would return to Bangladesh only when participatory democracy is restored. She would come back only after free and fair elections are held and the ban on the Awami League lifted, Hasina said in an email interview to a news agency.

Comments on the Caretaker Government

Hasina accused the Muhammad Yunus-led caretaker government of empowering the extremist elements in Bangladesh. Hasina also warned that the government's actions in Bangladesh may damage the latter's relations with India. According to Hasina, her government had enjoyed good relations with India, but the present leadership in Bangladesh was weakening that relationship.

Reaction from the Bangladesh Government

The Bangladesh government expressed displeasure over Hasina’s interviews with Indian media. Officials summoned Pawan Badhe, India’s Deputy High Commissioner in Dhaka, to express their displeasure over permission granted to a former prime minister in exile to speak at press events.
