Elon Musk Introduces 'X Chat' To Replace Direct Messages

X Chat Launch and Initial Availability

Elon Musk has replaced DMs on the X platform with something new called X Chat. The update will be rolled out first to selected users in a beta version. Musk announced the change directly on the platform.

Shift from Standalone Plan to Integrated Feature

Musk himself had earlier revealed that X Chat would be released as a standalone application. However, the company has now integrated X Chat into the main application of X. The features for which the platform designed X Chat include end-to-end encryption, large file sharing, and disappearing messages.

Default Encryption for All Users

Previously, DMs did not default to encryption. Encrypted chat was only available for paid subscribers under a separate tab. In the new update, all messages are going to fall into one encrypted ecosystem. Musk added that even the older messages would also be protected with encryption akin to Signal and WhatsApp.

Only Accessible by PIN

Users who receive this update will have to set a four-digit PIN for the first time they open X Chat. Each time the user enters the chat section, they will be prompted to enter that PIN.

Upcoming X Platform Releases

Christopher Park leads the X Developer Platform. He said that X recently shipped Grokipedia, XChat, and the XAPI beta. He also spoke of the following forthcoming releases: Grok Imagine upgrade with 15-second video support, XMoney, and an XFeed powered fully by Grok.
