Hasina Sentenced To Death; Protests Intensify Across Bangladesh

ICT Issues Death Sentence

The International Crimes Tribunal in Bangladesh has sentenced the former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death. Supporters began protesting the verdict across many regions. These protests created tense conditions in many areas.

Protests Turn Violent

According to reports, two persons were killed and several injured in the violence. Awami League declared a two-day general strike throughout the country, including Dhaka, protesting against the ICT decision. The interim government, headed by Yunus, deployed police in sensitive areas.

Police Clash With Protesters

Officials said supporters blocked roads in places such as Dhanmondi 32, where the residence of Hasina's father, Mujibur Rahman, is located. Protesters threw stones at nearby houses and shops. Police used sound grenades and tear gas to clear the crowd. A lathi-charge followed that heightened tensions further.

Hasina's Background and Verdict

Hasina stepped down as Prime Minister after widespread protests by students, and immigrated to India from Bangladesh last August. Since then, she has been living at a secret location in Delhi. Bangladesh authorities filed cases against her on various charges of crimes against humanity during the protests. The ICT reviewed these cases and pronounced her guilty on Monday, sentencing her to death.

Hasina's Response and Political Reaction

Hasina condemned the ruling and accused the current government of acting undemocratically. She stated that the verdict aimed to target her politically. She urged her party members to hold nationwide protests. Following her call, the Awami League announced a countrywide shutdown on Tuesday.
