Verdict On Sheikh Hasina And Shashi Tharoor's Response

Tharoor on the Death Penalty

  • Senior Congress leader Shashi Tharoor reacted to the recent verdict given by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal or ICT that sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death. Tharoor said the imposition of death penalty creates serious concern.
  • Speaking to reporters, he said he is opposed to the death penalty. Everyone needs a fair chance to defend themselves before such a sentence can be pronounced upon them. He said that he does not want to comment on the judiciary or another country's internal matters. The verdict, he said, remains questionable.

Introduction to Bangladesh Protests for Political Change

  • Students in Bangladesh took to the streets against the quota system that kept government jobs reserved for children of freedom fighters. The protest then widened and turned into a countrywide movement.
  • Then, Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of leader and went to India. Muhammad Yunus led a caretaker government in Bangladesh after the resignation of Hasina. A number of cases were registered against Hasina by the authorities on various charges of humanity during the protests.
  • The ICT completed the investigation, found Hasina guilty, and issued a death sentence. After the verdict, the Yunus government asked India to return Hasina to Bangladesh. Hasina has rejected the judgment as biased and politically targeted.
