ABS Mandatory Rule For Two-Wheelers May Get Delayed

Deadline likely to extend

The mandatory ABS rule for all two-wheelers may be delayed. The Centre had earlier set a deadline of January 1, 2026, and sought feedback from the manufacturers. After several rounds of discussions, companies have asked for more time. Because of this, the deadline may be extended.

Why Companies Objected

The government introduced the proposal in June this year. Manufacturers said they cannot arrange new resources within such a short timeline. They requested at least one more year. At present, ABS is required only for bikes above 125cc while smaller bikes use a Combined Braking System (CBS).

Expected Price Impact

If ABS becomes compulsory for all variants, the prices will go up. The increase can be some thousands of rupees. For motorcycles below 125cc, even a small price hike impacts sales. Companies say this impact will be big.

Suitability for Indian Roads

Meanwhile, manufacturers also sought clarification regarding ABS performance in smaller bikes on Indian roads. According to them, CBS already meets the requirement on these models. The government then ordered the Automotive Research Association of India to look into the technical details.

What does ABS mean?

ABS means Anti-Lock Braking System. It prevents wheel lock-up under sudden braking. This keeps the rider in better control and reduces skidding.
