US President Donald Trump is backing a Russia-Ukraine peace plan opposed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which ostensibly favors the Russian government. International media sources reported the approval.
The peace plan includes 28 points on how to end the more-than-three-year war between Russia and Ukraine, most of which are seen to favor Russia. Proposals were jointly prepared by US and Russian officials. The peace plan was recently presented to the Ukrainian government.
There was a meeting between Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff and Ukraine's national security chief Rustam Umarov. During the meeting, Witkoff said the US is ready to agree to the plan. Zelensky, however is against several of its conditions. Ukrainian authorities believe carrying out the plan will undermine the country's sovereignty.
According to the plan, Ukraine would:
- Hand over the remainder of the territories in eastern Donbass to Russia.
- Reduce its military strength by half.
- Withdraw US military assistance so vital for defense.
- Deter foreign forces from entering Ukrainian territory.
- Avoid acquiring weapons capable of attacking Russia.
- At the same time, Zelensky faces political pressure at home, with several of his close associates implicated in corruption scandals with appeals for some of his closest assistants to be replaced. According to analysts, the United States might want to take advantage of this unstable situation in order to create momentum for the plan.
- The timing and the content of the proposal have drawn international interest because of the continuing conflict and internal political problems within Ukraine.
