Justice Surya Kant Sworn In As The 53rd Chief Justice Of India

Justice Surya Kant took oath on Monday to become the 53rd Chief Justice of India. He was sworn in after Justice B.R. Gavai's term ended Sunday. With that, Justice Surya Kant became the first from Haryana to assume the office of the Chief Justice of India. His tenure will last until February 9, 2027.

Early Life and Education

Justice Surya Kant was born on February 10, 1962, in the Hissar district of Haryana. He did his graduation in 1981. He did his LL.B from the Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak in 1984. In the same year, he started practice at the District Court, Hissar.

Career Growth and Judicial Service

Justice Surya Kant moved his practice to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 1985. He was designated as a Senior Advocate in 2001. He was sworn in as a Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on January 9, 2004. He took oath as a judge of the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019. In the last two decades, he has sat on several important benches and has authored many landmark judgments.
