Reform of the UN Security Council
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said reforms to the United Nations Security Council are required. He said these reforms are not optional. He stated that advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence, must be accessible to all countries. He said these technologies should support all people. Modi spoke at the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa. He also met South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. They discussed the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) leaders' summit. Modi said National Security Advisors from the three countries should meet to strengthen security cooperation.
Strengthening the IBSA Partnership
Modi said India, Brazil, and South Africa need to coordinate their counter-terrorism efforts. No double standards should be allowed, he added. He said technology is an enabler of human-centric development. Modi also suggested the usage of technology platforms, as created for UPI and COVIN, in cybersecurity. IBSA should also support climate-resilient agriculture, he said. Modi said that IBSA connects three continents and is more than a basic alliance. He said IBSA can lead and shape safe and reliable AI regulations which will always accord priority to people. He also said the misuse of AI-whether deepfakes or terrorism-needs to be curbed. He said AI embodies future capability development.
Meetings with world leaders
Modi met Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Hellens and Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoff. Modi wrote on the ‘X’ platform that he discussed defence cooperation with Carney. He also invited Carney to India. Modi met IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. He left Johannesburg for Delhi on Sunday night.
Upcoming G20 Presidency
The United States was supposed to take over the next presidency of the G20. President Trump had earlier said he would not join the summit. He did not attend. As a result, South Africa's Department of International Relations and Cooperation will assume responsibilities.
India–South Africa Cooperation Modi and Ramaphosa discussed cooperation in trade, investment, food security, and AI. They agreed to support investment in startups. Modi congratulated Ramaphosa for hosting the G20 Summit. Ramaphosa joked, saying that if Modi had warned him about the difficulty of hosting, they might have stepped away. The room laughed. Ramaphosa said they learned from the large G20 event in Delhi hosted by India. Modi replied that “small is always beautiful.”
