The White House has clarified statements made by President Donald Trump with regard to the H-1B visas that allow foreign workers to enter the U.S. to perform specialized jobs.
President Trump has previously raised fees on H-1B visa applicants, and has just admitted that the US is short of skilled labor. Some of his supporters have criticized his backing of H-1B visas.
White House Press Secretary Carolyn Leavitt elaborated on the administration's stand. She said that President Trump wants to preserve American jobs and attract foreign investment at the same time. Leavitt explained that Trump does not want foreign workers to displace American workers but wants to grow the manufacturing industries of the U.S.
As part of this plan, the administration has imposed tariffs on several countries and is negotiating trade agreements. Now, H-1B visas are part of that plan. The idea is that foreign companies should invest in America and bring in specialized workers on a temporary basis. Once the businesses grow, they need to hire American workers and replace foreign employees
Leavitt made it clear that when companies invest in the U.S., jobs must be created for Americans. Their intention is to expand the horizons of employments and to develop indigenous industries.
