US President Donald Trump has announced measures to review immigration from certain countries, saying foreigners who pose a potential threat to national security will be deported and Green card holders from selected countries will be thoroughly vetted.
These decisions come after a shooting incident near the White House involving an Afghan citizen. Of the two seriously injured, 20-year-old National Guard member Sarah Beckstrom died. The other person remains in critical condition.
Trump criticized the immigration policy of the previous administration. He said that a large number of Afghans were brought into the US without proper checks. He added that government benefits and subsidies for non-citizens could be reduced. Trump emphasized that the ones who pose a threat to security or disrupt social order may be deported.
Joseph Edlow, director of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, said green card holders from 18 countries, including Afghanistan, will be reviewed. He added that new guidelines will take effect immediately and will apply to pending applications as well.
Reports of Detentions
In San Diego, there is a report that a husband and wife were detained during a green card interview. According to attorney Saman Nasseri, the arrests target people who have overstayed in the US after their visas expired. Immigration lawyer Habib Hasbini also reported receiving several similar cases.
