America's Use of Indian Talent
Elon Musk believes that for many years, the US has benefited considerably by hiring Indian professionals. He said this on the podcast, People by WTF with Zerodha co-founder Nikhil Kamat. In fact, Musk shared that in terms of skilled workers' hiring, the abuse of H-1B visas is seen as one of the reasons anti-immigration sentiments in the country are growing. As per him, the previous administrations turned a blind eye towards the abuse and thus, the problem increased. These comments have been highlighted in view of increased immigration, visa fraud, and permanent residency rules taken by the US government in recent times with President Trump at the helm.
Issues of Border Security and Immigration
Musk told Varney the Biden administration had kept weak border control in place, leading to more illegal immigration. He further said this rise has greatly strengthened negative feelings toward immigration. This, Musk said, is supported by government benefits, which further drive immigration. People that come into the country illegally should not get those benefits, he added. Without better border controls, he concluded, the system can't work.
Hire American and H-1B Visa Challenges
Musk further emphasized that demand for skilled talent will always be there. He said that to achieve tough goals, the firms need strong talent. Simultaneously, some companies work on cost-cutting policies, and therefore, they may hire foreign workers at lower salaries compared to the wages being paid to American employees. Musk elaborated that his firms—Tesla, SpaceX, and X (Twitter)—hire highly talented workers and pay them above-average salary. He further explained that outsourcing firms have damaged the credibility of the H-1B visa program. He said that he doesn't want the program to end; however, he said that the misuse of the system must stop.
Musk's Message to Indian Job Seekers Mr. Musk addressed Indians who intend to work in the US. He said he respects people who contribute more than what they take from society. He asks people to stay focused on being contributors, and give more importance to what they give to society as opposed to what is taken from it.
