Apple and Samsung have held discussions with the Centre on the order to pre-install the Sanchar Saathi app on mobile phones. The department had ordered installation during the manufacturing of new phones and through software updates on the existing phones.
Industry sources have told PTI that Apple may not comply with the order in its present form. It would rather discuss the issue with the government and look for a middle path.
According to the government, all phones manufactured or imported in India will have to have the Sanchar Saathi app installed within 90 days from the date of the order. Samsung is also reviewing the orders. Sources say the company may hold discussions with the government before complying with the requirements.
When PTI sought a clarification from both Apple and Samsung over email, neither responded.
Former CMD of BSNL and Independent Director at Lava International Anupam Srivastava supports the decision taken by the government. He said that it would upgrade India's cybersecurity in the telecommunication segment and also reduce mobile phone frauds with Sanchar Saathi being pre-installed.
