Iran Seizes Oil Tanker; Indian Nationals Among Crew

Seizure of Iranian Oil Tanker in Gulf of Oman Iranian has seized an oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman. The incident happened after midnight on Friday. Reports from international media stated that there are India nationals on board.

The total number of crew members on board the ship was 18. The crew members came from India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka. The Iranian government reported that the ship was carrying oil illegally.

Iranian reports indicate that the tanker had close to 6 million liters of oil on board. The Iranian government stated that the Iranian navy disabled the navigation systems because of the illegal activity. Iranian government officials have been quoted several times saying that they seize ships that are conducting illegal fuel smuggling within Iranian waters.

Tehran is an oil-producing state where the prices of fuel are relatively low. Due to such a price discrepancy, some individuals have been seeking to smuggle oil to other nations. Iranian government officials continue to pursue such individuals.

In a related move, it has also been reported that the United States government seized an oil tanker close to the Venezuelan coast two days before. The United States government has accused the shipping vessel's captain of transporting illegal Venezuelan and Iranian oil.
