Charges against the BBC
A defamation case has been filed by Donald Trump, the former US President, against the BBC. Donald Trump had claimed that the BBC had misrepresented a statement he had made during an event surrounding the US Capitol on the 6th of January, 2021.

The compensation amount claimed in the damages suit is of $10 billion, equivalent to approximately ₹90,000 crores. The Duke claimed that the BBC harmed his public image. This incident also saw the Duke claim the breach of a code of practice according to Florida Law.

The case is 46 page long and has been filed in a federal court based in Miami. Trump stated that the meaning of his statements is only that people should hold non-violent demonstrations. Trump alleged that the BBC had edited a couple of lines in his address in a manner that it would seem threatening. In each case, Trump has demanded a sum of $5 billion.

Trump addressed the crowd for close to an hour before the attack on the US Capitol by his supporters on January 6, 2021. As far as the lawsuit, in which the plaintiff is the aggrieved party, is concerned, the BBC had clipped some statements from the said address and used them for its Panorama show. The show was said to include statements that had a violent tone.

Following the political pressure that resulted from the scandal, reports emerged that the BBC Director General, Tim Davie, as well as the News Chief Deborah Turness, had stepped down.
