Emergency Location Services Launched For Android Users In India

While launching ELS, Google said that Android smartphone users in India can now send emergency location information to police and emergency responders when calling emergency numbers.

How Emergency Location Services Work

During the call to the emergency number or sending of a message, the phone automatically sends location details to the emergency response center. This occurs even if the call disconnects within a few seconds. This system uses GPS, Wi-Fi, and mobile network data for location identification.

Integration with State Emergency Systems

For ELS to work, state governments have to incorporate the service on their emergency response systems. The Uttar Pradesh Police Department is the first to adopt this feature in India. Similarly, Google has called upon other states to implement the same system.

Supported Devices and Requirements

Emergency Location Services work on any Android phone using Android 6 or later. No extra apps or additional hardware need to be used by those willing. That feature also works when calling, for instance, 112 or any other emergency number.

Data Privacy Explanation

Google assured that location data being shared through Emergency Location Services are not collected nor stored. It remained confidential and was sent only to emergency responders to help find users more quickly.
