On Wednesday, the Indian Space Research Organisation marked an important achievement under the country’s commercial launch service. The space agency successfully accomplished the LVM3-M6 mission, also known as the “Bahubali rocket launch.” The mission initiated by the ISRO launched the American communication satellite “BlueBird Block-2” into orbit from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC-SHAR) located in Sriharikota.
Heavy Satellite Successfully Deployed
- The BlueBird Block-2 satellite has a mass of 6,100 kg. This is the first time that ISRO has launched a satellite that weighs more than that. The space mission was launched by the commercial wing of ISRO, named NewSpace India Limited, along with a US company named AST SpaceMobile.
- There was an initial delay of 90 seconds in the launch because of a technical issue that caused it to get rescheduled from 8:54 AM. With the launch vehicle being 43.5 meters tall, the LVM3-M6 launched at 8:55:30 AM. There were three stages in this launch mission.
- The satellite separated successfully from the launch vehicle fifteen minutes after the lift-off. At an altitude of 520 kilometers, the satellite was placed within its desired orbit.

“The BlueBird Block-2 satellite, scheduled for launch in 2022, aims to enable direct communication between mobile devices and satellites in space. The satellite, according to AST SpaceMobile, will enable mobile users worldwide to make 4G & 5G voice calls, perform video calls, send and receive messaging, as well as broadcast, without the need for ground network infrastructure.”
Sucess of Mission Hailed by ISRO Chairman
- After the successful mission, the ISRO Chairman, Dr. V. Narayanan, verified the success of the mission. He congratulated the scientists involved in the mission and made it clear that the success achieved by the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is 100 percent in the launching of the Launch Vehicle Marks (LVMs). He mentioned that "LVM3-M6 is the largest ever mission from Indian soil."
- The mission is one of the best launches globally, said Dr. Narayanan. He continued that ISRO is currently providing launch services for 34 countries. He also said that if a successful outcome is realized with the mission, it will give ISRO confidence for future missions, including the Gaganyaan mission that is a human spaceflight mission.
