US Embassy Issues Advisory On H-1B Visa Scams

There is a warning from the United States Embassy in India to visa applicants who are being targeted by scams involving H-1B visas. This is in the wake of delays in the processing of the visas due to restrictions by the United States.

Scammers Target Visa Applicants

  • Reports from the embassy indicated that scammers are taking advantage of the delay in scheduling appointments for the H-1B visa. Scammers approach victims in order to offer a chance to get visas without waiting for appointments. The embassy said these were untrue.
  • The information was shared on X, formerly known as Twitter. The embassy warned candidates against going through agents or third parties.

Only Official Channels Are Valid

The embassy clarified that appointments for visas must only be done through official US government websites. Anyone who offers any visa services beyond the aforementioned platforms is in fraud. It further clarified that any extra payment beyond the fee is not needed by applicants.

Reason for Visa Delays

  • Indian H-1B visa applicants are facing delays due to the new US social media screening policy. This new policy has resulted in visa interviews being delayed by several months.
  • India has also expressed concern on this matter. Earlier, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that talks are being held with the concerned authorities from the US regarding this issue.
