Bangladesh Group Calls For Cancellation Of Work Permits For Indians

The tension in Bangladesh continues despite the death of a student leader and member of Inqilab Mancha, Sharif Osman Bin Hadi. The organization has shown discontent with the government and made demands, including the persecution of Indian nationals in the country.

Demands Raised by Inqilab Mancha

  • Inqilab Mancha, an Islamist militant group, issued a public warning to the Yunus-led caretaker government. They have demanded, within 24 hours, the arrest of those involved directly in Hadi's murder and those who aided them. Along with this, they have demanded the revocation of the work permits of Indians staying and working in Bangladesh.
  • The group also demanded that if the Indian government fails to extradite Sheikh Hasina, the government of Bangladesh should bring a case against the Indian government to the International Court of Justice. These demands were placed on the official Facebook account of the Inqilab Mancha group through postings. The group also organized large protests for Monday.

Background of the Incident

  • “Sharif Osman bin Hadi,” who was only 32 years old, was well known for his opposition towards Indians. He was shot in Dhaka on December 12 and sustained grave injuries. Later, he was taken to Singapore for medical assistance, where he breathed his last on December 18.
  • Soon after the news of his death was out in the public domain, there were widespread demonstrations in various parts of Bangladesh. During this, there were attacks on some offices of the media and Awami League.

Developments and International Response

  • According to reports in the Bangladeshi media, the two persons who were involved in the murder of Hadi had already entered India. As a result of this report, India came out with a strong statement condemning the violence and the events.
  • The events remain under close observation as protesters and political pressures rise in Bangladesh.
