Visa Rules Increase Fear Among Immigrants In The United States

The Christmas and New Year holiday season has seen travel the sharpest of rises in the United States. Resident of the country are going to make a lot of trips during the long holiday period. On the other hand, the strict visa and immigration rules have brought about a fear factor among the immigrants living in the country, and consequently, the majority of them are staying back home instead of traveling.

Travel Cancellations Survey

  • A survey by The New York Times and KFF shows a great number of immigrants are giving up travel plans. This group comprises the Indian immigrants and other foreign nationals living in the U.S. The primary reason here is the fear of coming under the radar of the immigration authorities.
  • The survey has reported that 30% of the immigrants had canceled their trips by choice to escape the immigration check. Among the H-1B visa holders, 32% had this concern. Even 15% of the naturalized U.S. citizens admitted to having similar fears. Undocumented immigrants are worst affected, as 63% of them declared that they were indoor and making as few movements as possible.

Unwillingness to travel within the United States

  • The trends indicate a reluctance on the part of immigrants not only to travel internationally but also domestically. The uncertainty and anxiety have been heightened due to the intensified immigration enforcement.
  • The Trump administration has made it hard for several visa categories including the H-1B visa. Consequently, some technology companies have suggested their foreign workers refrain from traveling abroad unless it is really unavoidable.
