U.S. President Donald Trump has pointed out that India might be subjected to increased tariffs if his concerns are not properly dealt with. According to an English-language media report, he uttered these words while talking about future steps related to Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro.
Remarks Released by the White House
The White House released an audio recording on its official X account that featured Trump making a mention of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In the audio, Trump was heard saying that Modi is a nice person, but he knows that Trump is not content. He furthermore stated that it is essential for India to keep Trump satisfied. Trump cautioned that if India persists in trading with Russia, the U.S. would very quickly increase tariffs.
Connection to Russian Oil Imports
As per a Reuters news story, Trump also said that in case India goes against the U.S. by being neutral in the situation of Russian oil, then India would face increasing tariffs. Such comments have linked trade measures quite directly to India's energy trade with Russia.
Now That the Timing Is Right
The alert comes at a delicate moment since there are trade negotiations between India and the U.S. already taking place. Previous to this, Trump had caught attention by saying that Modi during their talk had guaranteed him that India would no longer import oil from Russia.
