Denmark Warns NATO Could End If US Takes Over Greenland

Greenland is now in the limelight because the US took a step that involved former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. The Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was an immediate respondent to the US President Trump who suggested a discussion on Greenland in twenty days. She also stated that if the US attacked any NATO country, all ties would be broken. Furthermore, she suggested that it could be the end of NATO.

About NATO

NATO, standing for North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is a military alliance. It was formed in 1949 by twelve nations that included the US, UK, France and Canada. The main reason for the formation of this organization was to prevent the Soviets from gaining more territory. Presently NATO boasts a membership of over thirty countries. Any nation that wishes to join NATO has to be prepared to give military assistance in the alliance operations.

Greenland's Status and US Reply

After the statements made by Frederiksen, Trump’s advisor Stephen Miller came out with a counter. He put Denmark’s ownership of Greenland into doubt. Miller pointed out that by owning Greenland, the US would be able to secure NATO and its interests in the Arctic.

Also, Miller’s wife Katie Miller was successful in creating a buzz on social media. She uploaded a colored map of Greenland in the pattern of the American flag with the word “SOON” on it.Through this discussion, the world is now aware of the strategic position of Greenland in Arctic security and relations between NATO and Russia.
