President of the United States Donald Trump declared that the acquisition of Greenland by the United States would be done at any cost. He eventually went on to say that the plan would be forced even if the local people did not approve it. He warned that if the United States did not take action, then either Russia or China could take over the land.
Trump said this to journalists at the White House. He also said the US does not want to have Russia or China as its close neighbors in the Arctic area. Additionally, he stated that the US first attempted to take over Greenland through diplomatic means. When the talks were unsuccessful, he claimed more powerful measures became necessary.
Strategic Importance of Greenland
- Trump argued that Russia and China have started using the water routes near Greenland and that such movements are the reason for the US security risks. In his view, the US would be conceding rivalry powers the right to their expansion in the region if it did not take over Greenland.
- He insisted that Greenland was a place of high strategic and military significance for the US. According to him, it was not only the end of the world but also control over the country which was critical to blocking the oppositions in the Arctic. He also mentioned that the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio would be having talks with leaders from Greenland and Denmark next week on the issue.
Comments on Venezuela and Oil Production
- Trump also talked about Venezuela and its oil reserves. In his opinion, money coming from Venezuelan oil would be shared among both Venezuelan people and US citizens. He asked the US oil companies to get involved in the extraction of oil from Venezuela.
- He added that production of oil at a higher rate would lead to an increase in fuel availability and consequently a drop in oil price. Trump also verified that he had meetings with Venezuelan oil companies too.
