The US decreased one lakh visas in the year following Donald Trump's inauguration. Among the cancelled visas there were approximately 8,000 student ones and 2,500 special category visas.
Visa Cancellations Reasons
The US State Department on Monday declared that it had cancelled the visas of people who were in confrontation with US armed forces. It was also announced that the individuals are being deported.
The officials counted the cancellation of one lakh visas in a year as a record. They pointed out four major reasons for these actions:
- Staying in the USA longer than allowed
- Driving while intoxicated
- Being involved in battery cases
- Being involved in theft-related crimes
Dramatic Increase When Compared to the Previous Year
The State Department noted that in 2025 visa cancellations were more than 150 percent increased compared to the previous year. This indicates a stricter enforcement policy under the current government.
More Extensive Screening Steps
The department further explained that as a part of the vetting process they are doing a social media screening for all the visa applications.
