No Security Threat Identified For Bangladesh Players

In the purview of the International Cricket Council (ICC), there are no longer any security issues for the Bangladeshi players to take part in the T20 World Cup matches that are to be played in India. The ICC was able to make this conclusion after examining the situation and found a credible threat would not require a change of venue.

ICC Refusal for Venue Change

  • The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) proposed the shifting of Bangladesh's matches from India to Sri Lanka. The ICC was not in favor of this demand. Reports suggest that the ICC was not persuaded by the BCB's argument for not going to India.
  • Contemplation on the issue, ICC delegates ascertained that the security issues mentioned were also not from reliable sources. The report mentioned that the risk of happening any incident with Bangladeshi players in India is very low.

T20 World Cup Hosting and Context

The T20 World Cup is set to start on February 7, and it will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Pakistan has chosen to play its matches in Sri Lanka and not tour India for the tournament. This decision was taken after India's rejection of Pakistan's suggestion for a venue change for the Champions Trophy last year.

Background to the Security Concerns

  • In the debate among Indian cricket fans, the factors contributing to the tensions between India and Bangladesh, as well as the news of violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, were mentioned. An incident of this nature made headlines during the IPL auction when KKR picked Mustafizur Rahman, the left-arm pacer from Bangladesh. As per the instruction from the BCCI, KKR released him soon after.
  • The BCB, after the incident, raised the issue of its players' security in India and submitted a formal plea to the ICC for shifting their World Cup matches.

Bangladesh Expected to Play in India

  • After completing its review, the ICC concluded that the concerns were unfounded. This decision will be formally communicated to the BCB. As a result, the Bangladesh team is expected to travel to India and participate in the tournament as scheduled.
  • If Bangladesh chooses to boycott the T20 World Cup, the ICC rules state that match points would be awarded to opposing teams. In addition, Bangladesh could face disciplinary action from the ICC.
