Trump’s Statement On Greenland Sparks International Reactions

US President Donald Trump made strong statements about Greenland, the island which is of great strategic importance. He directed his criticism toward Denmark and other European countries, and especially NATO, for not taking measures against Russia during the last twenty years, which were warned by NATO. Trump said that the US had to take over Greenland for security reasons because Denmark had not acted. He then went on to stress that the time to act had come and reiterated the US' desire to buy Greenland.

International Reactions

Trump's statements came on the heels of his announcement of an extra tariff of 10 percent on those countries that do not share the US view on Greenland. The European countries, the UK and France among them, responded negatively. French President Emmanuel Macron declared that the island of Greenland would not be given up to the US and would not be part of the Danish territory and that the EU was considering using its trade tool, known as the ‘Trade Bazooka,’ in retaliation.
