Vijay Amritraj Honored With Padma Bhushan

The Indian government has presented the Padma Bhushan which represents the third-most distinguished civilian award in India to Indian tennis player Vijay Amritraj. The government of India revealed the Padma Awards on Sunday.

The Padma Shri award was given to Rohit Sharma and Harmanpreet Kaur who both led India to World Cup championships. The Padma Shri award was given to former hockey player Baldev Singh, former women’s hockey goalkeeper Savita Punia, para high jumper Praveen Kumar, and two para powerlifters Bhagwandas Raikwar and Pazhanivel. The Padma Shri award was given posthumously to legendary Georgian wrestling coach Vladimir Mestvirishvili. He trained wrestlers including Sushil Kumar, Yogeshwar Dutt, Bajrang Punia, and Vijay Dahiya.

Vijay Amritraj: Tennis Career

  • Vijay Amritraj from Chennai played as a Davis Cup player during his professional tennis career. He achieved 15 singles titles and 13 doubles titles throughout his career. The government awarded him the Padma Shri honor in 1983. Amritraj participated in Indian teams which advanced to the finals of the Davis Cup during the 1974 and 1987 tournaments. His peak ATP ranking reached the 18th position.
  • Amritraj reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 1973 and 1981, and the US Open in 1973 and 1974. He reached the Wimbledon doubles semifinals in 1976 to complete his career accomplishments. His career record in singles matches totals 405 victories and 312 defeats. After he stopped playing professional sports he became a commentator, film actor, and sports executive.

Rohit Sharma: Aggressive Captain

People know Rohit Sharma by his nickname "Hitman" because of his aggressive batting style and his skills as a leader. His leadership brought India two major victories when they won the T20 World Cup in 2024 and the Champions Trophy in 2025. Rohit has scored 11,577 runs in ODIs 4,301 runs in Tests and 4,231 runs in T20s. He has achieved 50 centuries and 111 half-centuries throughout his career in all three cricket formats. He currently plays only in ODIs because he has stopped playing Tests and T20s.

Harmanpreet Kaur: Landmark Year

Harmanpreet Kaur received the Padma Shri for her achievements in 2025. India won its first ICC Women’s World Cup title when she led the team to victory against South Africa in the championship match. She became the second Indian captain after Dhoni to lift a World Cup trophy on home soil. Harmanpreet has scored 4,409 runs in ODIs and 3,784 runs in T20s while he has played six Test matches in which he scored 200 runs.
