Deputy CM Ajit Pawar Dies In Maharashtra Plane Crash

Maharashtra experienced its most devastating loss on Wednesday morning when Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar died in a plane crash. The plane crashed in Baramati at 8:45 AM during Pawar's flight from Mumbai to Zilla Parishad election campaign activities. The accident resulted in the deaths of all four people who were onboard the aircraft.

The Crash Cause and Crash Details

  • The first investigation results indicate that the accident happened because of a technical failure. The aircraft developed its first problem after leaving Mumbai for approximately one hour. The aircraft lost control to crash during its emergency landing procedures. A large fire erupted at the onset of the incident while the plane seems to have split into two sections because of the crash impact.
  • The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) confirmed that no one survived. The deceased included Ajit Pawar, Mumbai PSO Vadip Jadhav, Captain Sumit Kapoor, Captain Shambhavi Pathak, and flight attendant Pinky Mali.

Ajit Pawar Political Career

  • Ajit Pawar entered the world on July 22, 1959. His father Anantrao Pawar belonged to the family of Sharad Pawar who became a prominent politician and served as Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Ajit Pawar followed his uncle into politics.
  • He began his professional journey in 1982 when he joined the governance team of a cooperative sugar factory. He worked as chairman of Pune District Central Cooperative Bank for 16 years. He won the Baramati Lok Sabha seat in 1991 but later left the position to support Sharad Pawar's political career.
  • Ajit Pawar won the Baramati assembly seat in the 1991 by-election and became a Maharashtra MLA who represented this constituency for eight terms. He held the position of Deputy Chief Minister in the Mahayuti government which Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis led at the time of his passing.

Personal Life

Ajit Pawar is survived by his wife and two sons. His wife, Sunetra Pawar, is a Rajya Sabha MP.
