ICC Faces Possible Revenue Loss Over India–Pakistan Match

The ICC will experience substantial financial damage because the India-Pakistan T20 World Cup match has not yet occurred. The match is expected to produce total revenue worth approximately Rs 2200 crore. The ICC and its stakeholders face major problems because Pakistan decided to boycott the match.

Financial Impact on ICC and Broadcasters

  • On Sunday, Pakistan announced its decision to boycott the upcoming match against India which is set to occur on the 15th of this month. The ICC will experience major financial damage if the match gets called off. Geostar has begun its negotiation process with the ICC to resolve the current situation.
  • Geostar will experience a financial loss between Rs 200 and 250 crore if the match does not take place. The advertising revenue loss will contribute significantly to the overall financial setback. Advertisers pay up to Rs 40 lakh for a 10-second advertisement slot during an India-Pakistan match. The upcoming match would directly impact commercial revenue.

Impact on Pakistan Cricket Board

  • The Pakistan Cricket Board will also experience financial damages. The PCB earns approximately Rs 300 crore annually. The organization could face income loss and legal penalties because of its boycott. The ICC has informed that the PCB will face severe consequences because of its current situation. The ICC declared that Pakistan's decision will negatively affect sports development.
  • The situation has grown more complicated because ICC, PCB, and BCCI established a hybrid format for India-Pakistan matches from 2027 onward. This agreement weakens Pakistan’s position in justifying the boycott.

Concerns Over Knockout Matches

Questions have arisen about Pakistan's knockout stage position against India because its official position remains unknown. A PCB official said the team would act according to government instructions even in that situation. Pakistan will face the Netherlands in its first World Cup match on July 7 2023.

Sunil Gavaskar Calls for Action

  • Sunil Gavaskar who served as India's captain in the past requested that authorities impose punishment on Pakistan because of its match boycott. He said Pakistan might change its decision within four to five days after seeing global reactions. He mentioned that those kinds of changes into opposite direction have happened before.
  • Gavaskar stated that if Pakistan fails to present legitimate justification for its boycott then the ICC should implement strong measures. He stated that to stop teams from doing the same thing again organizations must implement powerful protective measures.
