Talks And Sanctions: The United States’ Mixed Approach Toward Iran

The United States and Iran have begun their negotiations in Oman. The United States has established new restrictions on Iran's oil commerce. The two countries execute these simultaneous activities which demonstrate a dual approach to dealing with Tehran.

New Sanctions on Iranian Oil Trade

  • The US State Department imposed new sanctions against 15 companies and 14 oil tankers which operate in Iran's crude oil export activities. The statement identifies these entities as organizations which handled the movement and commerce of Iranian oil.
  • The State Department said that Iran uses revenue from oil exports to fund militant activities abroad and to suppress its own population. The sanctions aim to block these income sources. The US will maintain its enforcement operations against networks that operate in crude oil and petroleum products and petrochemical trade which involves Iran.

Diplomatic Talks in Oman

The United States and Iranian officials are conducting diplomatic talks in Oman despite the existing sanctions. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi described the talks as a “very good start.” He said the discussions are mainly focused on preparing the ground for future negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.

US Pressure on Nuclear Agreement

  • The United States continues to push Iran to reach a nuclear agreement. President Donald Trump warned that Iran is aware of the consequences if no deal is reached. He stated that Tehran has an interest in negotiating an agreement.
  • US officials also made statements about the movement of naval forces toward the region. They repeated their position that Iran must not attempt to develop nuclear weapons at the same time.
