US Revises Fact Sheet After India-US Trade Deal Announcement

The trade agreement between India and the United States has reached its complete conclusion. The White House published a document that summarized the main elements of the India-US trade agreement. The US government updated the document one hour after its initial distribution.

Changes in Tariff and Purchase Commitments

  • The initial fact sheet version reported that the Indian government planned to decrease tariffs on specific pulse products. The White House later deleted that statement from their document. The updated document now omits all references to tariff decreases for those particular products.
  • The document also changed the wording related to purchases. The earlier version said that India had “committed” to purchasing goods worth 500 billion dollars. The updated version replaced the word “committed” with “intends to purchase.”

India’s Position on Agricultural and Dairy Products

  • The United States government has not achieved any agreement with India to decrease import tariffs on agricultural products and dairy products. The government continues to defend its existing policy which aims to safeguard domestic requirements for these two industries.
  • Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal declared that the trade agreement would not create negative effects for Indian farmers and micro, small, and medium enterprises. The US fact sheet revisions have attracted public interest through their current developments.
