Bangladesh Elections: BNP Leads Parliamentary Vote
  • The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has won the parliamentary elections. The party together with its allies achieved victory by winning 212 out of 299 available seats. BNP plans to establish a government which will operate under the leadership of Tariq Rahman.
  • The Jamaat-e-Islami party secured 70 seats. The other parties together with independent candidates attained the remaining available seats. Vote counting remains ongoing. The official election results have not yet been released.
  • BNP has achieved the required majority to establish a government. Tariq Rahman ran for office in the Dhaka-17 and Bogra-6 electoral districts. He achieved victory in both electoral districts. Rahman’s mother Khaleda died three days before the election. Rahman instructed party members to delay their victory festivities. He requested that only simple prayers be held.
