BNP Wins Bangladesh General Election

The political situation in Bangladesh remains stable after the government replacement. The country of Bangladesh has dealt with political unrest since the middle of 2021. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) won a decisive victory in the 13th general election. The party secured two-thirds of the parliamentary seats. This victory marks BNP’s return to power after 20 years.

  • The BNP party secured 209 out of 299 available parliamentary seats.
  • Jamaat-e-Islami, a religious party, came second with 68 seats.
  • Tariq Rahman, who is the son of Khaleda Zia and currently holds the position of BNP chairman, is expected to become the next Prime Minister.

The last BNP government existed from 2001 until 2006. The Awami League party won all following elections after that period. The student movement in August 2024 caused Hasina's government to collapse. Muhammad Yunus has governed Bangladesh since an interim advisory council took control.

The Election Commission reported 59.44% voter turnout. A referendum on an 84-point reform package, known as the July National Charter, was held simultaneously. The reforms received support from 60.26% of participating voters.

First Male Prime Minister in 35 Years

Female Prime Ministers have ruled Bangladesh since 1988. Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia led the country during this period. The first male Prime Minister to take office after 35 years, Tariq Rahman, will become Prime Minister if he takes office.

Election Results Highlights

  • Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, a BNP leader and Hindu politician, won Dhaka-3. He defeated Shahinur Islam of Jamaat-e-Islami by 99,163 votes.
  • The only Hindu candidate for Jamaat-e-Islami, Krishna Nandi, lost the election in Khulna-1.
  • Seven women won seats; six from BNP and one independent.

The National Citizen Party (NCP), influential in the student movement, won only 6 seats. They contested in alliance with Jamaat-e-Islami.

International Reactions

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called Tariq Rahman to congratulate him. Modi said the election reflects people’s trust in Rahman. He also affirmed India’s support for a democratic and progressive Bangladesh. BNP responded by thanking Modi for his message.
