- Guterres shared these remarks in an interview with PTI before leaving New York to attend the AI Impact Summit-2026. India organizes this summit which will take place in the Southern Hemisphere for the first time.
India’s Role in UN Peacekeeping Missions
- Guterres confirmed that India provides strong support to the United Nations peacekeeping operations. Approximately 5,000 Indian security personnel participate in missions throughout multiple nations. He stated that the United Nations maintains its appreciation for India because the country has continuously helped the organization.
- He also remembered India’s historical achievement in 2007 when the country sent its first all-female police force to UN peacekeeping operations in Liberia. He called this decision important because it marked a step forward.
India’s Growing Influence in the Global Economy
- Guterres stated that India works to defend democratic systems across the entire world. He described India as a responsible democratic nation which possesses a strong international voice.
- He also pointed out that developing nations currently control a significant part of the worldwide financial system. India which has one of the globe's most rapidly expanding economic presences occupies this position among developing nations.
Concerns Over the UN Security Council
- Guterres responded to the critiques which people made against the United Nations. He stated that the world currently faces rising difficulties which include crisis situations and the problems of inequality and poverty and hunger and terrorism. Many people expect the UN to respond effectively.
- He clarified that the UN represents 193 member states, not only the Security Council. However, he explained that the Security Council includes only a limited number of countries. This structure sometimes prevents timely and balanced decisions on peace and security. He said much of the criticism arises from the Council’s limitations.
Meetings in New Delhi During AI Impact Summit-2026
- During his visit to New Delhi for the AI Impact Summit-2026, Guterres will meet President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He will also interact with leaders from major international technology companies attending the summit.
- A review meeting of the UN’s International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence will take place in Delhi. The panel includes 40 global technology experts. Among them is Balaraman Ravindran from IIT Madras.
