Agreement Likely to Begin in April

  • Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced that the India–US Interim Trade Agreement is expected to come into effect from April. The two nations have reached a final agreement which they established through their treaty negotiations.
  • He also stated that the free trade agreements signed with the United Kingdom and Oman are likely to become operational from the same month. The New Zealand agreement will take longer to complete because it needs additional time which will delay its implementation until September.

Formal Signing Expected in March

  • India and the United States will sign the interim agreement according to Piyush Goyal's previous statements which predicted the March signing date.
  • Sergio Gore the US Ambassador to India stated that the agreement might receive official signing within the near future. He shared this update during an AI conference held in Delhi. He further mentioned that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to visit India in the coming months.

Legal Finalization Meeting Scheduled

  • The two countries will hold a meeting to establish the legal framework for their agreement. The meeting will last for three days and is scheduled to begin on February 23.
  • The interim trade deal will start its implementation in April after the parties complete their legal obligations and sign the agreement.
