Large Shipment Of Russian Oil Approaches Indian Coast

Oil Supply Near India

  • Tankers are transporting Russian crude oil to India, which contains 1.5 crore barrels that are being transported by more than twelve tanker ships. Global oil transportation faces disruptions because West Asia conflicts have increased tensions in that region.
  • A report by Bloomberg states that these tankers left Russia after the United States allowed India to continue importing Russian oil during the ongoing conflict involving Israel, the United States, and Iran. The ships will reach Indian ports during the next few days which they will navigate through the Arabian Sea.

Tankers Positioned in Regional Waters

  • Ship-tracking data shows that several crude oil tankers are already close to the Indian coastline. Some Vessels operate in the Arabian Sea while others traverse the Bay of Bengal. The majority of these vessels will reach Indian ports during the upcoming week.
  • Eight additional tankers have reached Singapore's waters, where they currently hold seven million barrels of Russian crude oil. These vessels may also head toward India soon.

Route Changes Before U.S. Approval

Some Russian tankers changed their routes toward Indian ports even before the official U.S. approval for India to purchase Russian oil according to a Bloomberg report. The shipment plans indicate that organizations prepared for the upcoming policy announcement.

India’s Oil Imports from Russia

Since 2022, India has imported large quantities of Russian crude oil. Recent U.S. sanctions and energy trade restrictions between the United States and Russia resulted in decreased Russian energy imports.

Impact of West Asia Tensions

  • Energy transport has also faced challenges because of rising tensions in West Asia. Iran has announced plans to close the Strait of Hormuz, which is a key route for global oil shipments. Any disruption in this passage can affect energy supply worldwide.
  • The arrival of new Russian oil shipments could help reduce pressure on India’s energy supply during this uncertain period.
