Meta Introduces New Security Tools
- Meta has launched new anti-scam solutions which help decrease fraudulent activities on its platforms. The solutions operate throughout WhatsApp and Facebook and Messenger. The primary objective of the system protects users against cybercriminal attacks.
- The system detects suspicious activity and warns users before they interact with scammers. The system generates alerts which help users identify dangerous activities. The updates will enhance safe communication methods which users can use on Meta platforms.
Protection Against WhatsApp Device Linking Scams
- Scammers frequently use WhatsApp device linking features to execute their fraudulent schemes. This feature allows users to connect their WhatsApp account to another device. Many people use it to access WhatsApp on a computer or a second phone.
- Scammers have found a way to exploit this system. The system enables users to link their account with a device which the scammer operates. Scammers obtain full access to private messages through their new access. They use their access to send messages to contacts who request money or share dangerous APK files in group chats.
- The WhatsApp platform now uses a warning system which detects linking activities that appear to be dangerous. The alert informs the user that the action might be a scam. Users also see a “Don’t Link” option. The users can use this option to immediately halt the process which protects their account.
Detection of Fake Facebook Friend Requests
- Fake friend requests serve as the starting point for numerous Facebook scams. Users receive friend requests from people who already exist in their friend circle. People often accept these requests because they believe the account belongs to the same person.
- The accounts display mutual friends which makes them more trustworthy to users. After the request is accepted, the scammer sends messages. The messages contain emergency financial requests which the person needs to handle immediately.
- To prevent this type of fraud, Meta has added a new AI-based detection tool. When a suspicious friend request appears, the system shows additional details about the account.
These details include:
- The location of the account
- The number of mutual friends
- The date when the account was created
This information helps users judge whether the account is genuine.
Additional Alerts in Messenger
- The protection system also works inside Facebook Messenger. When users receive messages from unknown or newly created accounts, the app may show a warning.
- These alerts encourage users to review the message carefully before responding. The goal is to prevent users from sharing personal information or sending money to scammers.
