Government Implements Measures to Prevent Shortage of Cooking Gas
- The Central Government has started steps to manage concerns about a possible cooking gas shortage in India. Authorities are already working to stop black-marketing of LPG cylinders. The government is currently conducting discussions with Iran about safe delivery of LPG tankers which will transport gas to India.
- National media reports, citing government sources, confirm that these talks are underway. Officials expect that these efforts will increase the supply of cooking gas in the country.
LPG Tankers Waiting Near the Strait of Hormuz
- Eight LPG tankers that are bound for India are currently waiting near the Strait of Hormuz. The area has become dangerous which has affected their ability to move. The Indian government has started negotiations with Iranian officials because of this situation.
- Sources say Iranian officials have responded positively to India’s request. The response creates a possibility that tankers will soon obtain safe passage to cross the strait.
Two Oil Tankers Already Reached Safer Routes
- Two oil tankers have already moved out of the conflict-affected region in West Asia. The first tanker reached India on Wednesday. The second tanker is expected to reach the country within two days.
- These two shipments will add about 3 million barrels of oil to India’s supply. This additional stock may help ease some pressure on fuel availability.
Commercial LPG Shortage Affecting Businesses
- At the same time, concern about the availability of cooking gas is increasing in several parts of the country. Many cities face difficulties in obtaining commercial LPG cylinders. The shortage of LPG supply creates operational difficulties for hotels, restaurants, and hostels which rely on LPG.
- Some establishments have already closed temporarily because they cannot continue cooking services without gas.
Restaurant Closures in Kerala
- The situation is especially serious in Kerala. By Friday, about 40 percent of restaurants in the state had stopped operations. Restaurant owners and managers say they had no option but to suspend services due to the lack of cooking gas.
- Despite these developments, the Central Government has stated that the country does not face a fuel shortage. However, long queues outside gas agency offices and petrol pumps continue to raise concern among consumers and businesses.
