Iranian Oil Shipment Changes Route From India To China

Tanker Route Update

  • Kpler reported that the Iranian oil tanker Ping Shun has changed its navigation path according to the ship-tracking system. The vessel was previously scheduled to reach the Indian port of Vadinar in Gujarat on April 4. The new tracking system now indicates that the tanker is heading to Dongying in China.
  • The experts believe that the situation requires more time to develop until it achieves complete confirmation. The vessel may have altered its route path while maintaining its original destination. The organization has not yet supplied any official confirmation.

Shipment Details and Loading Point

Kpler reported that the tanker began its crude oil loading operation at Kharg Island on March 4. The shipment contains approximately 600,000 barrels of oil. The tanker route alteration warrants investigation because the tanker planned to deliver oil to India.

India’s Past Imports from Iran

India used to be one of the main purchasers of Iranian crude oil. Iran possessed a considerable portion of India's total oil imports.

  • Iran reached its highest market share of 11.5% during this period
  • India imported 518,000 barrels per day in 2018
  • The daily import volume decreased to 268,000 barrels by May 2019

The country stopped all imports after that time. The halt followed U.S. sanctions on Iran, which restricted oil trade.
